Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

Food flies at her at three heights, and each height has its own move. Tap for a standing kick, short swipe up for a high kick, long swipe up for a jump kick, and swipe down to duck. Every level asks for all four.

My kick came out late, or as the wrong move.

Timing is judged the moment your thumb touches the screen; which move it was is decided when you lift it. So start the swipe on the beat rather than finishing it there — a long swipe that begins late is a late kick, however well it ends. A short, clean flick is easier to read than a slow drag.

What do Perfect, Good and Miss mean?

How close to the right moment you kicked. A Perfect kick sends food further and slows the world down for a moment. A Good kick still counts. A Miss means the food lands on her.

Why did kicking that one hurt me?

Anything with a bright red outline is not for kicking — durians, chilies, puffer fish, onions and garlic. Kick one and it hits you anyway. Duck instead: a duck dodges them whatever height they fly at.

Why did that heavy one barely fly?

Heavy food only flies far on a Perfect. A Good kick still clears it and still counts, but sends it short and pays as a Good. With thigh-high boots from the wardrobe, heavy food always counts as a Perfect — it flies far and pays as one — however you kick it.

How do chains and the combo work?

Knock a kicked item into the next one in the air and you get a chain bonus. Separately, every kick that lands builds your combo multiplier, and it keeps building until you take a hit, which resets it.

How many lives do I have?

Three. Every hit costs one, and the run ends when they are gone. In a World Tour city you can watch an ad to come back on one life, once per run. Challenge mode has no revives, so every score on the leaderboard was played the same way.

Can I pause?

Yes. Tap the pause button in the corner; play resumes after a 3-2-1 countdown, or the house button takes you home. Leaving the app in the middle of a run pauses it too.

How do I beat a boss?

Every city ends on a giant boss treat, and each one takes five kicks in rhythm. There is no shortcut — not a pair of boots, not a Perfect — so find the beat and keep it. If the boss reaches her, the run is over, however many lives she has left.

What is Challenge mode?

An endless run in a random city — before version 1.1 it was called endless mode, and your scores carried over. It starts gently and gets busier the longer you last, and your score goes to the Game Center leaderboard. Your ten best Challenge runs are kept on your iPhone as well, under Scores. The six cities, their bosses and their music are in the World Tour, the first door on the home screen.

My score is not showing on the Game Center leaderboard.

Check that you are signed in to Game Center, in Settings → Game Center. Only Challenge mode runs go to the leaderboard; the World Tour cities do not. If you were offline or signed out when you set a best, it is not lost — it is kept on your iPhone, and Heelstorm posts it the next time it opens while you are signed in and online.

Do I have to use Game Center?

No. If you are not signed in, nothing is sent anywhere and the game plays exactly the same. Your scores simply stay on your iPhone.

How do I earn coins, and what are they for?

Every run pays coins based on its score, and after a run you can watch an ad to double them. Spend them in the wardrobe on heels, boots and bodysuits. Sandals, pumps and ankle boots are about the look. Knee-high boots give you a bigger hit area and +10% score on everything you kick; thigh-high boots give +20% score, and heavy food always counts as a Perfect however you kick it. Tap anything to try it on and watch her walk in it before you buy.

Can I buy coins?

No. Coins are only earned by playing, or doubled by watching an ad after a run.

Will I keep my progress on a new iPhone?

Your coins, wardrobe, level records and scores are saved on your iPhone, and they are included in your iPhone’s own backup — iCloud Backup or a backup to your computer. Set up the new iPhone from that backup and your progress comes with it. There is no separate cloud sync between devices, and no account.

Will deleting the app delete my progress?

Yes. Deleting Heelstorm deletes its saved progress from the iPhone. Scores already posted to Game Center stay there.

Is anything about me collected?

Nothing tied to you. Heelstorm has no account, and your progress never leaves your iPhone. Google receives what it needs to show ads, anonymous gameplay analytics if you allow them, and crash reports; Apple receives your Challenge mode score if you are signed in to Game Center. In Europe you are asked first, and the PRIVACY button on the home screen changes your answer. The privacy policy sets out the whole of it.
